JCTrans: Would you please talk about why you choose logistics industry?
Mr. H.R. T. Ali: Shipping and Logistics are my family business; I was drafted into this profession by my father Mr. R.H.ALI, a ship-owner and one of the Shipping doyens in Ghana. So I choose a major related with shipping and port. I graduate with an MBA in Transport management and post graduate in Ports and Shipping Administration. Then I could make this business handy with facility.
JCTrans: Would you please talk about the characteristic of logistics industry in your country?
Mr. H.R. T. Ali: Logistics in Ghana has changed greatly in recent years. In this process, the most important change is the change of clearing process. The creation of off dock terminals electronic facilitate the clearing process. Thus Ghana has moved from pre-inspection to destination inspection.
JCtrans:Would you please talk about your company and yourself?
Mr. H.R. T. Ali: I worked in the Shipping industry for 32 years, starting from the family business Intercotra Ghana Ltd which was involved in operating its feeder vessel ¡°MV TEMA PRINCESS¡± on the west coast of Africa, dealing the business of shipping, clearing & forwarding.
I joined Maersk Ghana Ltd as the first batch employee in 1991 and worked for 9 years and went further my education at Cardiff University. During completion of my studies I joined SDV/Bollore group and worked for 8 years, and was transferred to Delmas Ghana and worked for a year. In 2007 was headhunted by DHL Global Forwarding after as Country general manager with the mandate of transforming the logistics division.
JCtrans:Would you please talk about your plan about your career?
Mr. H.R. T. Ali:My goal was to work for myself at my 50, but realized this dream 2 years ahead of the targeted year. The Chief Executive Officer H.R.T. Ali incorporated Supply Chain Movers Ltd in 2004 but started business in 2008 after leaving DHL.
Business has been very progressive and successful; We consulted for Messrs Inchcape Ghana in their setting up Ghana branch. SCM presently is doing projects for Labadi beach hotel handling all their project cargo from ex works to delivery to site for their 60beadroom extension.
Supply Chain Movers LTD is a 3PL company offering Shipping Husbanding, Protective Shipping Agency, Clearing & Forwarding, Transportation, Warehousing, Air freight, Air Charter for projects, Project sea cargo, sea freight, ex works to delivery to customer doorstep, Collateral Management, Consulting, Oil & Gas, Bunkering.
As part of our long term objective we intend to set up a Shipping/ Logistics Institute in order to beef up the Human capital in the industry.
JCtrans: How old is the retirement age in your country?
Mr. H.R. T. Ali:Retirement age in Ghana is 60years, voluntary retirement is 55years. We have lots of Chinese companies working in construction, factories; we find them to be very hardworking people, working to deadlines with excellent finishing.
