A significant phase of the expansion of container facilities at Port Botany is under way, the Southern Courier reported.
More than 200 concrete sections, known as counterfort wall units, are being constructed on site before being brought by barge to Botany Bay and lowered into place.
The 20m high counterforts will be used to construct the 1.8km wharf at the third terminal.
The State Government will invest more than US$233 million in the Port Botany expansion project this financial year, as construction hits its peak.
Ports Minister Joe Tripodi said the giant concrete blocks were being constructed on site to reduce the impact of trucking movements on the local community.
"The Port Botany expansion is a $897 million economic investment and one of the most extensive port infrastructure projects in Australia," Tripodi said. |
