Major container lines have announced rate increases for a variety of trades, as detailed below, slated to take effect in August and September:

Asia-Europe

Starting Aug. 1, Evergreen Line will boost rates in its trade from the Far East, including Japan, and the Indian subcontinent, to Europe and the Mediterranean. The hike will be $400 per 20-foot container and $800 per 40-foot container, including refrigerated and other special containers.

Asia-Latin America

Cosco will increase rates for all shipments from the Far East and Indian subcontinent to Panama and the Caribbean, starting Aug. 15. The hike will be $700 per 20-foot container and $1,000 per 40-foot and 40-foot high-cube container.

Similarly, Maersk Line will raise rates in its trade between Asia and South America, Central America and the Caribbean, as well as in its trade from South America to Europe and the Middle East, and from Africa to Asia.

Asia-North America

Hapag-Lloyd will increase rates for all cargo from East Asia and the Indian subcontinent to U.S. and Canada destinations, starting Sept. 1:

  • For cargo moving to the U.S. West Coast and Vancouver, British Columbia, the hike will be $320 per 20-foot container, $400 per 40-foot container, $450 per 40-foot high-cube container and $506 per 45-foot container.
  • For cargo moving to the U.S. East Coast and U.S. inland points intermodal and reverse inland points intermodal locations, as well as Toronto, Montreal, Halifax and all other Canada inland destinations, the increase will be $480 per 20-foot container, $600 per 40-foot container, $675 per 40-foot high-cube container and $760 per 45-foot container.

Similarly, Cosco will hike rates for all dry and reefer cargo on its eastbound trade from the Far East and Indian subcontinent to the U.S., beginning Sept. 1:

  • For cargo moving to the U.S. West Coast, as well as intermodal cargo via U.S. West Coast ports destined to points in California, Oregon and Washington, the increase will be $320 per 20-foot container, $400 per 40-foot container, $450 per 40-foot high-cube container and $506 per 45-foot container.
  • For intermodal cargo and mini-landbridge intermodal cargo moving via U.S. West Coast and Canadian ports destined to points in states other than California, Oregon and Washington; cargo moving to the U.S. East Coast and Gulf ports; and intermodal cargo moving U.S. East Coast and Gulf ports, the increase will be $480 per 20-foot container, $600 per 40-foot container, $675 per 40-foot high-cube container and $760 per 45-foot container.

Intra-Asia

Cosco will hike rates for all shipments from the Far East to the Red Sea, starting Aug. 8. The hike will be $300 per TEU.

Furthermore, Hapag-Lloyd will increase rates for all cargo from East Asia, excluding Japan, to the Persian Gulf, by $200 per TEU, effective Aug. 15.

Miscellaneous Surcharges

Effective Aug. 1, Emirates Shipping Line will implement a peak-season surcharge for Indian subcontinent and Middle East lanes, and Cosco will initiate an emergency bunker adjustment for all shipments from the Far East to South Africa.

In addition, Hapag-Lloyd has notified carriers that value-added tax regulations will take effect in China on Aug. 1.

Starting Aug. 5, Hapag-Lloyd will implement a low water additional fee for all cargo moving via the Port of Montreal.
