The go-slow campaign by workers at one of state-run Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust's (JNPT) private container terminals has been called off after talks between workers and management.
Workers operating trailers that cart containers from the wharf to the storage yard and vice-versa at Gateway Terminals India Pvt. Ltd had started the campaign to press for more wages, crippling port operations and stalling exports and imports. JNPT handles nearly 50% of India's containerized cargo.
"The go-slow has been withdrawn and the normalcy of port operations has been restored," said a senior executive at Gateway Terminals, requesting anonymity.
He said the management reached a consensus with workers on Thursday night and operations would be normal starting Friday morning. A representative of the workers confirmed the development.
Gateway Terminals lost some 40,000 twenty-foot containers that were diverted to two other facilities of JNPT or to ports in Gujarat because of the go-slow.
Gateway Terminals is the largest of the three container terminals operated by JNPT, India's busiest container port. It is 74% owned by APM Terminals Management BV, the container terminal operating unit of Danish shipping company AP Moller-Maersk Group.
India's state-owned rail hauler of containers Container Corporation of India Ltd holds the balance stake in Gateway Terminals.
