THE six new quay cranes of Northport in Malaysia's Port Klang will boost annual container handling capacity to 5.6 million TEU from the start of next year and raise productivity.
NCB Holdings chairman Ahmad Sarji Abdul Hamid was quoted as saying in local media reports the six cranes purchased for MYR170 million (US$53.4 million) have an outreach of 24 containers on a vessel, making them six containers longer than the older cranes at the terminal.
"These new features will greatly improve Northport's handling capacity and productivity of its wharf operations," he said.
Mr Ahmad Sarji said two of the six cranes delivered earlier this year are being used at Container Terminal 2 (CT2), while the remaining four will be fully operational by next year and used for its CT4 operations, reports Seatrade Global.
The six new cranes bring the port operator's crane fleet for quayside operations to 32 units.
