The central government is planning to privatize two new major ports planned at Sagar in West Bengal and Duggarajapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, alleged general secretary of Water Transport Workers Federation of India general secretary T Narendra Rao.
Addressing a press meet here on Sunday, Rao said that the Centre doesn't want to bring the two ports under the Major Ports Act as it plans to build them on a public private partnership (PPP) basis.
Mentioning that private ports are snatching away cargo from major ports, he said that some of the oldest ports in the country such as those in Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai and Vizag are facing innumerable problems due to the lopsided policies of the government.
He said that while the Parliamentary standing committee on transport, tourism and culture advised the government not to develop any private ports in the vicinity of major ports, the central government had gone ahead with its plans due to which major ports are suffering. Citing the example of Vizag, he said that three private ports such as Krishnapatnam, Gangavaram and Kakinada were taking away business from the Visakhapatnam Port. He appealed to the central government to save the major ports in the interest of the country.
