Le Havre port maintains high box growth rate
POSTED: 9:12 a.m. EDT, June 19,2007
Container traffic at the port of Le Havre in April grew by 25.4 per cent over the same month last year to a record 220,000 TEU, according to provisional figures released by the facility.

A port statement said the April figures confirmed the high growth of early-year 2007, and the new record shows container trade through the major French port has recovered.

"Once again, the milestone of 200,000 TEU monthly - passed for the first time in January 2007 and then during the two following months (February and March) - was largely passed in April, thus confirming the very good business level," the statement declared.

In the first four months of the year, the port handled 829,000 TEU, representing a rise by 26.6 per cent over the corresponding period in 2006.

The port said it was also satisfied with the 2,133 vessels that made calls at the facility, representing an increase of 7.3 per cent over the same period in 2006.

Overall traffic for the first four months of 2007 amounted to 25.4 million tonnes, 2.9 per cent more than in the first four-month period in 2006.

The announcement of the statistics coincided with the recent visit to Japan by a mission organised by the Port of Le Havre to promote the facility as a distribution hub for Europe.
