One soldier of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) was killed and two others were injured by an explosion in southern Afghanistan, an ISAF statement said Tuesday.

The incident occurred on Monday, said the brief statement, which did not say which province it happened.

In accordance with NATO policy, ISAF does not release a casualty's nationality prior to the relevant national authority doing so.

However, media reports said the casualties, which were caused by a mine explosion in Kandahar province on Monday evening, were Canadians.

About 2,500 Canadian soldiers are operating in Kandahar province, as part of ISAF.

Some 70 foreign soldiers have been killed in volatile Afghanistan this year.
