POSTED: 9:40 a.m. EDT, February 5,2007

Japan's NYK Cruises Co. Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of NYK Line, recently conducted a severe-accident-response training exercise in collaboration with the Japan Coast Guard on board the 50,142-ton Asuka II.

The training exercise was based on a scenario in which a fire breaks out in a cabin on board the vessel while cruising in Sagami Bay with injured passengers and crew members needing prompt evacuation by Coast Guard helicopters and ships.

The NYK Group said in a statement that the session was part of its continuing effort to proactively conduct accident response training with to ensure safe operations on vessels.
