Chinese language proficiency competition concludes in Malaysia
POSTED: 4:25 p.m. EDT, June 1,2007

Two Malaysian college students won over other fourteen students in the Malaysian zone final of "Chinese Bridge 2007" Chinese language proficiency competition here on Thursday, securing their entry to compete in China with competitors from more than 50 countries.

Nadia Binti Sabri, a female student from Malaysia's University Technology MARA, and Kang Boon Swan, a male student from Han Chiang College, respectively won in the non-Chinese Malaysian student group and the Chinese Malaysian student group in the competition, which was live telecast by local satellite TV channel operator Astro.

This is the first time that a local television operator made a live telecast of "Chinese Bridge" language proficiency contest in the country.

Nadia and Kang won their entry tickets after four rounds of competition, including creative speech delivery, talent show, tongue twister and quizzes.

Gu Jingqi, political councilor of the Embassy of China in Malaysia, was present at the competition.

The Malaysian zone competition started early this month with the participation of 48 non-Chinese Malaysian college students and more than 100 Chinese Malaysian students, which is believed to be a record high in the country.

The 6th "Chinese Bridge", Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students, is scheduled to be held in Changchun, capital city of northeast China's Jilin Province from Aug. 3 to 13.

More than 100 candidates from more than 50 countries will attend the semi-final and final rounds of the competition with theme of "China welcomes the Olympics" this year.

The annual competition was initiated in 2002.
