Thailand's Finance Minister Chalongpob Sussankarn ruled out any special measures to reign in the strong baht after holding an emergent meeting with the Bank of Thailand (BoT) Governor Tarisa Watanagase on Thursday.
The minister said the meeting was just a discussion between the government and the central bank, although there is intense speculation that the government will endorse measures to remedy the rise of the Thai currency, local radio FM 100 reported.
A senior BoT official also confirmed that Chalongpob and Tarisa were only "meeting to evaluate the situation of the baht," without plans to announce any particular measures.
The Thai baht has appreciated by 7 percent since the beginning of this year, following a 12 percent gain last year.
Earlier, Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont noted the baht rise stemmed partly from a heavy selling of the U.S. dollar by exporters.
