World Bank likely to release 200 mln USD to Bangladesh
POSTED: 10:09 a.m. EDT, April 4,2007

The World Bank is likely to release 200 million U.S. dollars before the next budget to Bangladesh as it deems that its government is on "right track" to implement the conditions under the bank's Development Support Credit (DSC IV), Bangladeshi news agency UNB reported Tuesday.

The indication came during a press briefing by Sadiq Ahmed, World Bank sector director for poverty reduction and economic management of South Asia, at the bank's Dhaka Office on Tuesday.

Ahmed said that a World Bank team would have negotiation meetings with the government from April 8 to 10.

"After those meetings, the team will convey the outcomes to the World Bank Board. The Board in its May 29 meeting will decide the fate about the disbursement of 200 million dollars (under the DSC- IV)," he said.

The World Bank senior executive hinted that the disbursement would be made before the next budget as the government is on the right track for implementing the conditions.

The World Bank already disbursed 700 million dollars as budgetary support under the DSC.

Ahmed informed that the World Bank is ready to extend the DSC if the Bangladeshi government so wants. "We got the indication that Bangladesh wants to extend the DSC to undertake more reforms, " he said.
