Nepal's chief election commissioner (CEC) Thursday warned that a delay in Constituent Assembly (CA) elections would spread frustration among the people.
Speaking at a program organized in Kathmandu, Commissioner Bhojraj Pokhrel asked the eight-party alliance to fix a date for CA polls without any further delay in order to save the country from falling back into a state of uncertainty.
Talking to Xinhua, Pokhrel said that the political parties should be clear about the electoral system of the CA elections as certain sections of the society are still raising questions about the electoral system. He urged the political parties to be clear regarding the polls at the earliest.
Regarding the electoral system, Pokhrel said that the Election Commission (EC) could only execute its duty based on decisions made by legislators on what method should be adopted while conducting elections.
"We have to conduct the elections based on that legislation as EC can not review the electoral system on its own," Pokhrel told Xinhua.
Pokhrel also urged people not to expect much from the EC regarding the electoral system of the CA polls as certain section of the society is still expressing concern if the elections would be held under proportionate representation or any other method.
"The government should address such concerns before announcing the date for CA elections," said Pokhrel while expressing concerns over the fate of the CA polls.
"Although we had fixed June 20 as the date for CA polls earlier too, we couldn't conduct the elections at that time. If the elections are not conducted in November-end again, then a frustration will creep into people's mindset," Pokhrel said.
"The frustration spread among the masses will only push the country further back into the darkness if the CA polls are not conducted on time."
Saying that Nepal's credibility in the international arena would be tarnished if the CA polls were not held on the fixed date, he said that the commission would work as per the rules and regulations formulated by the eight-party.
