Another double-digit handling increase in the ports of Rostock

Source:transportweekly    2015-9-9 14:25:00

A total of 14.2 million tonnes (gross) of goods passed the ship's rail in Rostock during the first half of 2015. The lion's share of 13.1 million tonnes was handled at the overseas port. According to the port and shipping authority another 1.1 million tonnes were loaded and unloaded at other port facilities in Rostock, such as the chemical port of Yara and the cargo and fishing port. The amounts of cargo at all the port facilities of Rostock thus again showed a double-digit handling increase of ten percent compared to the first six months of last year. The number of ferry passengers carried to and from Northern Europe also increased by 36,000 to 886,000. "The port of Rostock is buzzing with activity, and that is a good thing for the city and the federal state. More than two thirds of all seaborne goods of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern are handled at the port city of Rostock", says Jens A. Scharner, Managing Director of Rostock Port Development Company.

Rostock overseas port
At 13.1 million tonnes of goods handled at the overseas port, last year's result was exceeded by 1.2 million tonnes or ten percent. 7.4 million tonnes came from the wheeled cargo of ferry and ro-ro traffic. There was an increase by 857,000 tonnes or 13 percent in this segment. The share of ferry and ro-ro goods in the overall handling at the all-purpose port of Rostock amounted to 56 percent in the first six months. 44 percent or 5.7 million tonnes were achieved with the handling of dry and liquid bulk goods and general cargo, which means an increase by 300,000 tonnes or five percent. "This makes Rostock one of the strongest growing German ports", says Dr. Gernot Tesch, Managing Director of Rostock Port Development Company, adding: "In the space of two years, cargo handling has gone up by 25 percent and is now back to pre-crisis levels. This growth is driven by ferry and ro-ro as well as dry bulk goods."
The port of Rostock recorded 3,863 calls by ferry, ro-ro, cargo and cruise vessels in the first six months of the year, 2,995 of which were port calls by ferries and ro-ro vessels.

Wheeled cargo
173,260 trucks (escorted units) were carried on the three ferry and three ro-ro services to and from Denmark, Sweden and Finland, an increase of seven percent. Handling of unescorted units (trailers) also increased, with 62,105 trailers having been loaded and unloaded (eleven percent). The doubling of railway wagons carried by sea to 11,828 in the first half of 2015 contributed to the positive result in the ferry and ro-ro division. "Apart from a natural growth this is also due to market shares won. Despite the currently very low oil prices the SECA regulations lead to a reshuffling of the networks of lines with a tendency to favouring ports like Rostock offering shorter sea routes", says Dr. Gernot Tesch.
34 weekly intermodal transport trains are handled at the intermodal transport terminal, running to and from Verona (11), Hamburg (5), Karlsruhe (5), Novara (4), Brno (3), Duisburg (3), Domodossola (2) and Wels (1). The number of trailer units handled at the intermodal terminal increased from 33,934 in the first half of 2014 to 35,177 this year (976,860 tonnes).

Bulk goods and general cargo
The handling of liquid goods during the first six months of 2015 decreased by 230,000 tonnes to 1.3 million tonnes compared to the first half of last year. Less naphtha, petrol, gas and fuel oil as well as biodiesel were pumped across the edge of the quay.
There was again an increase in the handling of dry bulk goods by twelve percent to four million tonnes. The handling of grain (brewer's barley, barley, malt, rye and wheat) was around 250,000 tonnes above the first half of 2014, totalling two million tonnes. Grain handling accounts for half of all dry bulk goods moved. Apart from grain handling there were also notable increases in the handling of calcium-ammonium nitrate (CAN) and coal (plus 40,000 tonnes each). "The impressive trend especially in grain handling highlights the need for investments both on land and at sea. Apart from deepening the navigational channel, which is urgently necessary, these include another high-powered grain loader and investments in additional storage capabilities by the grain dealers", explains Dr. Gernot Tesch.
380,000 tonnes of general cargo were hoisted over the sides, an impressive 170,000 tonnes more than in the first half of 2014. The plus results from increased handling of sheet metal, slabs, paper and wind power plants.

Building projects and Investments by Rostock Port Development Company
This year the Port Development Company plans to invest around 15 million Euro. The renewal of the eastern section of Ost-West-Strasse at the port will be tackled in the second half of the year.
In order to support the increased traffic volume and handling activities in the ro-ro division, the Port Development Company has created an additional pontoon landing stage at berth 61. An additional road connection to the southern port boundary is being built until the end of August 2015, and cargo handling areas are being thoroughly renovated. The relocation of the side stern ramp and gangway from berth 66 to berth 53 at the ferry terminal is currently in full swing.
Two further focal points involve compensation measures. The Green Spaces Authority of the Hanseatic City of Rostock has ordered the Port Development Company to create a park-like area of around 20 hectares east of Werftallee in Gross Klein as a statutory compensation for port infrastructure projects. This plot is owned by the Port Development Company and will be improved into a nature experience area until the end of 2016.
Furthermore the Port Development Company has begun the renaturalization of the Diedrichshäger Moor (bog) near Warnemunde. This measure was approved and granted planning permission in 2009. It will enable the port to compensate for future extensions at the existing special-purpose area of the port by engaging in nature-protection measures via an eco-account. The plan is to renaturalize this bog and especially perform the extensive earthmoving of degenerated bog soil still outstanding in a largely eco-friendly manner within the next two to three years. A public invitation to tender has been started in order to find suitable specialized companies for this special work in the bog until the end of 2015.

Germany's most popular port for cruise tourists from around the world
This year's cruise season started on 5 May with a double port call by the American passenger vessels Celebrity Silhouette and Regal Princess. Both are among the largest cruise liners operating in the Baltic Sea and both came to the mouth of river Warnow for the first time.
Ten other first-time port calls by Birka Stockholm, Costa Favolosa, Costa Luminosa, Horizon, Louis Aura, Magellan, MSC Sinfonia, Ocean Dream, Serenade of the Seas and Viking Star have already taken place or are still due.
181 port calls by 39 cruise liners had been notified for this year. Five port calls were cancelled so far due to storms and technical problems.
Rostock-based shipping company AIDA Cruises again operates two of its vessels from its Baltic home port of Warnemunde,  AIDAdiva and AIDAmar. 38 port calls with changes of passengers are scheduled. AIDAmar will end the 2015 cruise season on 17 October. Costa, MSC, Princess and other cruise operators plan also numerous port calls with changes of passengers here, i.e. German passengers in particular will be embarking and disembarking in Warnemunde. Demand concentrates on 9 days of the cruise season and eleven of the cruise liners calling this year will use the overseas port as an alternative. There were quintuple port calls on 5 and 17 July. A quadruple port call is still coming up on 30 August. More than 100 port calls take place on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. In total, 108 days this year will see cruise liners calling at the port on river Warnow.
At around 380,000 cruise passengers (by Cruise Europe definition, which adds up embarking, disembarking and transit passengers, more than half a million cruise travellers) similar passenger numbers are expected as last year. "Among the most frequented cruise ports in the Baltic Sea, Warnemunde ranks sixth after St. Petersburg and the capitals Copenhagen, Tallinn, Stockholm and Helsinki. Among the German ports, Rostock's Baltic Sea resort is the most popular port for cruise tourists from all over the world", Jens A. Scharner summarizes.
