Mitsui bags contract for Jakarta port project

2013-3-4

The operator of Jakarta's main seaport has selected Japan's Mitsui & Co to build, finance and operate the first container terminal at a new port facility planned for the city, reported Dow Jones Newswires.

The new port will be part of the Pelabuhan New Priok Kalibaru Port, which is being developed adjacent to Jakarta's main Tanjung Priok Port to help ease congestion at the busy gateway.

"The agreement with Mitsui will ensure that starting September 2014, the first ship will dock at the first container terminal at the NewPriok Kalibaru Port," Yan Budi Santoso, spokesman for state-owned port operator PT Pelindo II, said in a statement.

Pelindo II will choose partners to develop two more container terminals and two fuel terminals at the new seaport within the next nine months, he added.

The new port facility will require total investment of US$2.5 billion.

Indonesia's government is striving to improve vital infrastructure, such as seaports and roads, across the country in order to lure investment.
