Singapore hits 1b gross tonnes earlier than anticipated

The Singapore maritime industry has crossed the one billion gross tonnes shipping tonnage mark earlier than expected.

The achievement came four months earlier compared to four years ago when the shipping tonnage surpassed the billion mark in December 2004.

The vessel with the honour of crossing the one billion mark was APL Australia, a container ship of 50,243 gross tonnes.
