MSC is making strides in adding capacity this year acquiring some 10 ships of 4,000-6,000 TEU to add 52,000 TEU to its fleet that stands at 1.3 million TEU against world-leading Maersk's 2.03 million TEU, according to AXS Alphaliner figures.

Eight of MSC's additional ships are from Maersk. Three have already joined MSC, and have been renamed. They are the 4,000-TEU MSC Malacca (formerly the Maersk Malacca), the 4,200-TEU MSC Dresden (formerly, the Maersk Dresden), the 4,200-TEU MSC Salerno (formerly the Maersk Delano).

More ships are expected to join MSC this month, the 4,800-TEU Maersk Moncton and Maersk Marathon and the 4,200-TEU ships have been re-leased by MSC earlier as the MSC Dartford, the MSC Malaysia, the MSC Sweden and the MSC Dalton.

CSCL is expected to lease to MSC two 5,551-TEU vessels, the CSCL Shangahi and the CSCL Hong Kong, with deliveries in August and September as the MSC Shenzhen and the MSC Hong Kong. MSC has also has the 5,551 TEU Fortune, which was rebuilt in China after the explosion and fire in 2006.

MSC has also taken the Tonnevolds-owned 3,987-TEU Toledo at the end of her Maersk charter and has renamed her MSC Toledo.
