Damco joins ocean freight forwarders elite

2008-5-8

Damco, the forwarding arm of Denmark's A.P. Moller-Maersk Group, said its ocean volume in 2007 has placed it among the top 10 international ocean freight forwarders.

The Copenhagen-based company was established July 1, 2007 when A.P. Moller-Maersk merged Dutch freight forwarding company Damco Sea & Air, the former forwarding arm of P&O Nedlloyd acquired in 2005, with the forwarding activities of Maersk Logistics, formerly known as DSL Star Express.

Damco now has 200 offices in more than 100 countries and in 2007 shipped 621,000 TEUs and air freighted 62,000 tons. It's revenue for the year was over $2.9 billion.

Using Armstrong & Associates figures dating back to June 2006, Damco said it would have ranked ninth on the top 10 ocean freight forwarding table:

1. Kuehne + Nagel: 1.6 million TEUs.

2. DHL Danzas, 1.2 million TEUs.

3. Schenker, 890,000 TEUs.

4. Panalpina, 842,000 TEUs.

5. BDP International, 800,000 TEUs.

6. Excel, 717,000 TEUs.

7. UPS SCS, 660,000 TEUs.

8.Expeditors, 643,000 TEUs.

9. NYK Logistics, 619,000 TEUs.

10. ABX Logistics, 500,000 TEUs.

"Since our launch last year, our ambition has been to be the best forwarder in the industry and to be on the shortlist for any tender, anywhere," said Bo Lindberg Andersen, global head of Damco.
