CMA CGM, NYK Line opens DT3 terminal at Duisburg Port

2008-4-24

CMA CGM and NYK have opened the Duisburg Trimodal Terminal D3T in the Logport logistic park in Duisburg Rheinhausen together with Duisport authorities.

The opening of the facility is intended to cater to fast growing cargo flows and help alleviate rising congestion at the sea ports, a joint statement said.

Gateway traffic moved via the Port of Duisburg to European hinterland destinations will account for a significant share of the throughput projected for the new terminal, which will also be able to handle sea freight. "CMA CGM and NYK will both use the terminal to consolidate their cargo. As most of the cargo was not shipped through the port in the past, the other Duisport terminals and their networks will benefit," said Erich Staake, president and CEO of Duisburger Hafen AG.

Said NYK Group Europe chief executive Masamichi Morooka: "The start-up of the D3T is a key element in our strategy of growing our inland distribution network and creating a pan-European hub for central and east European traffic."

CMA CGM intends to use D3T to provide its customers with a range of intermodal services through its subsidiaries CMA Rail and River Shuttle Containers. CMA CGM group chief executive vice-president Farid Salem said, "It is so far a unique link between the sea ports and the European hinterland, and a key component of the group's door-to-door strategy."

D3T features four railroad tracks, each of half train length, on a total surface area of 37,500 square metres. The gantry crane, which handles both ship and Duisport, operates train cargo. With a track width of 57 metres and an overall track length of 137 metres, it is not only the largest container bridge in the Port of Duisburg, but also the largest inland crane worldwide, the release added.
