2007-12-28

The United Arab Shipping Company (UASC) has announced the commencement of construction of its six high-speed containership Jazan as part of an order for eight ships from South Korea.

A UASC statement added that work on the other five A7 ships was progressing on schedule, reported the Kuwait News Agency.

UASC had signed a US$850 million contract to build eight 6,919-TEU containerships, which will be fully compliant with the latest MARPOL regulations regarding pollution, and will have speed exceeding 25 knots, the company said.

The Jazan will fly the Saudi flag and be delivered in July. All eight ships under this contract will be completed and delivered in 2008.

UASC's existing fleet consists of 35 owned and chartered vessels totalling 200,000 TEU capacity, deployed on routes to North America, Europe, the Mediterranean, the Far East, South America and Africa to the Arabian Gulf, the Red Sea and the Indian subcontinent. The company also operates services in the major container trades between Europe, the Mediterranean and Asia.
