AS part of a group-wide effort to prevent serious accidents at sea and to bolster safe operation management systems, Japanese shipping group MOL has started to implement an in-house programme called: "Safe Ship Operation: Learning from Incidents".
The programme is divided into six sessions that run over a two-week period until the end of the month. The course takes a co-ordinated approach to improving safety and focuses on teaching safety lessons learned from earlier incidents at sea.
The safety lessons are taught in a workshop environment with a captain and chief engineer with extensive marine experience present to answer questions. The workshops are mainly targeted towards educating shore-based young employees involved in ship operation.
The lecturers explain the background and causes of various accidents and near-miss incidents, and help employees in charge of practical operations recognise the safety risks involved. They are also taught appropriate actions to prevent accidents from happening, a company statement said.
