Spring brings boom in live chicks for China Southern
POSTED: 11:05 a.m. EDT, March 16,2007
THE mainland's largest carrier, China Southern Airlines, says it is transporting more live chickens from the southern province of Guangdong to other parts of China than ever before.

The average number of chicks boarding China Southern aircraft at the airline's Guangzhou Cargo Station each day this year has so far risen from one to two tons. Most chicks are taken to Chengdu, Chongqing, Hangzhou and Shanghai from Guangdong.

To guarantee 100 per cent safe and humane transportation of all live animals, China Southern's Guangzhou Cargo Station has adopted a series of stringent measures to move the feathered fowl, these include: assisting cargo owners to book all cargo space in advance to ensure the chicks can fly in an oxygenated cargo hold; placing transiting chicks in a waiting room reserved for animals and carrying out disinfection of the holding area daily.
