Union Pacific Railroad is investing US$6.1 million in the development of a railway line between Milwaukee and Wisconsin near Sheboygan, that will replace 26 miles of rail.
The funds will also be spent renewing the surfaces at 62 road crossings and to replace seven switches
The railway operator is funding the project that began on June 10 and is scheduled to be completed by the beginning of September.
The project is one of 1,500 that Union Pacific will complete across its network this year to help improve train operating efficiency and enhance safety.
"In addition to helping move our customers' goods safely and efficiently, our investments support communities by reducing traffic congestion, facilitating industrial development and promoting economic expansion," said vice president of public affairs Donna Kush.
She noted that one train can take up to 300 trucks off the roads, and the railway operator can move one ton of freight 500 miles on a single gallon of diesel fuel.
