Landslide blocks transportation

2008-11-4

KUPANG, E. Nusa Tenggara: Land transportation connecting seven regencies on Flores island, East Nusa Tenggara, remains paralyzed due to a recent landslide in Manggarai regency.

The landslide, caused by heavy rain on Thursday, blanketed a 50 meter stretch of road near Tengo village.

A road worker, Muhammad Sawon, was rushed to Ruteng General Hospital after sustaining head injuries as a result of the landslide.

Manggarai's regental administration has deployed two excavators to the area, but their efforts were foiled as landslides continued to occur.

Intercity buses were forced to stop and passengers had to walk, past the piles of soil and stones, to board other buses. The landslides also disrupted transportation of basic necessities, as trucks could not pass the affected area.

Last year, landslides and floods in the area claimed dozens of lives. -- JP
