Singapore Changi Airport handled 157,500 tonnes of airfreight in May, an increase of 3.5 per cent year on year to overtake growth of 2.0 per cent increase of 4.37 million people in passenger movement, according to Shipping Gazette.
Cargo shipments increased by 0.8 per cent to 755,400 tonnes during the first five months of the year ending May 2014. Passenger movements during the same period were up by 1.8 per cent at 21.95 million passenger movements.
Growth in passenger traffic was attributed to an increase in air travel between Singapore and Northeast Asia, South Asia and Southwest Pacific, offset by weaker performance on some Southeast Asian routes.
Among Changi Airport's top 10 country markets, Hong Kong and Vietnam registered double-digit increases. Travel to and from Thailand continued to be impacted by the political situation, decreasing by 17 per cent, with Bangkok and Phuket traffic dropping by 24 per cent and seven per cent respectively.
During this five-month period, new airlines joining Changi were VietJet Air and Tigerair. VietJet Air launched a daily Ho Chi Minh City-Singapore service on May 23 becoming the sixth airline to operate this route.
Tigerair commenced a thrice-weekly service to Xi'an, China from May 15. With this latest addition, Tigerair now serves six Chinese cities from Singapore.
SilkAir introduced a new thrice-weekly service to Kalibo, Philippines, the nearest international gateway to the white sandy beaches of Boracay, an immensely popular beach holiday destination. The service will be offered through a circular routing through Cebu.
SilkAir also added Mandalay, Myanmar to its network in June. The thrice-weekly service will operate a Singapore-Yangon-Mandalay-Singapore circular route.
Singapore Airlines has also resumed its seasonal twice-weekly service to Athens, Greece from early June. The service will be offered through the summer season up to October 9, 2014.
