Boeing took a major step last week towards completing the assembly of the first B747-8 freighter as mechanics joined the forward and rear fuselage sections with the centre section and wing.
The company told IFW it expected the first of the 130-tonne payload freighters to be completed later this quarter or early in the fourth quarter, with the first test flight taking place by the end of this year. The first delivery is expected during the third quarter of 2010.
The B747-8 is the largest commercial aircraft ever assembled by Boeing.
