JAL narrows losses in fiscal fourth quarter

2008-5-10

Japan Airlines posted a net loss of US$34.1 million for the fiscal fourth quarter ended March 31, compared with a loss of $66.57 million in the same period a year earlier.

JAL benifited from cost-cutting measures and a one-time tax-related loss worth about $521.76 million booked in the year-earlier quarter was no longer a factor.

The narrower loss underscores the success to date of the airline's efforts to streamline operations. Like rivals around the world, JAL is stepping up efforts to cut back labour and other operating costs.

It is also modernising its fleet with new, fuel-efficient airplanes to boost operating efficiency and absorb rocketing fuel prices in an intensely competitive industry.
