American Airlines pilots picket airports, including John Wayne and LAX, a week after 3,000 flights canceled

2008-4-20

After more than 3,000 canceled flights in one week, American Airlines faced picketing pilots today at major airports around the country.

The pilots' union demonstrated at LAX, John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana, and Taco Bell Corporation in Irvine, using last week's flight fiasco to highlight what they say have been failed management practices for years.

Daniel Hall, pilot and spokesman for the Allied Pilots Association, said American Airlines downsized operations at LA/Ontario International Airport, so no demonstrations had been planned there.

LA/ONT spokesman Harold Johnson said the airline currently offers five flights to and from Dallas at the Ontario airport.

John George, another union spokesman and pilot, said about 20 American Airlines pilots fly out of the LA/ONT every month.

"As a pilot, I'm responsible for the safe operation of aircraft," Hall said. "It gets my attention when mandated safety inspections haven't been complied with here."
